Why Class and Division matter for storage
DOT Class names the primary hazard family; Division narrows the risk. GHS category phrases refine severity. Together they inform whether you need fire-rated chemical storage buildings, oxidizer segregation, or toxic/corrosive containment. Poison Gas (Class 2.3) Storage
Division 2.3 materials are toxic gases that can be fatal or cause serious injury if inhaled. They often also carry flammability, oxidizer, or water-reactive secondary hazards.
Flammable Gas (Class 2.1) Storage
Flammable gases ignite easily in air and need ignition control, ventilation, and fire-rated or appropriately classified storage when quantities and codes require it.
Toxic / Poison (Class 6.1) Storage
Class 6.1 covers toxic substances that can cause serious harm through inhalation, ingestion, or absorption. Many also carry a subsidiary flammable or corrosive hazard.
Oxidizer (Class 5.1) Storage
Oxidizers can intensify fire or cause combustible materials to ignite more readily. They need strict segregation from fuels, solvents, and organic materials.
Dangerous When Wet (Class 4.3) Storage
Class 4.3 materials react with water to emit flammable gases. Moisture control and separation from water-based suppression assumptions are critical.
Flammable Solid (Class 4.1) Storage
Flammable solids can ignite through friction, heat, or flame and often need fire-rated, dry storage with controlled ignition sources.
Corrosive (Class 8) Storage
Corrosives attack metal, tissue, or both. Buildings need chemical-resistant containment and careful separation of acids, bases, and metals-sensitive inventories.
Flammable Liquid (Class 3) Storage
Flammable liquids (DOT Class 3 / GHS flammable-liquid categories) are the largest storage group in this database. Category numbers describe relative flash-point severity.
Unclassified & SDS-Confirmed Storage
Some Chemical DB records have an empty, “N/A,” or incomplete hazard class. Treat the Safety Data Sheet as the authority and use storage guidance from flammability, compatibility, and fire-suppression fields.
